Joop: SQUARE WHEELS was finished in the studio setup at Popei (Eindhoven), February 2019 and as a song found its final shape in a lull between tea and dinner. As I remember, Peter had just laid his exciting bass part over Toon’s drums and Henk’s ominous synth parts, or they had played and recorded it together (I’m not sure) and everybody went their way in the building while I stayed in the recording space with Frans Hagenaars, hoping to find some lyrics and record some vocals that might fit that structure. What you hear is the first and only try. It was something unlike anything I had ever sung before. And obviously something that had been waiting to be uttered. I felt it did not make sense to lose on the swing what I gained on the roundabout by doing another take.
Toon: Originally I created this beat for the ‘Steal The Trumpet Show’ by the Beukorkest, a project initiated and led by Rik van Iersel, in 2012. For “Square Wheels” Rik now made the video clip.
though we’re both into propulsion
share a love for far-off places
riding the same bus in different streets
though we’re both into propulsion
share a love for far-off places
we’ve come a long way baby, come a long way baby
but we’re so tired
tired of trying
trying to make those square wheels roll
but we’re so tired of trying to make
make those square wheels roll
we’re sooooooo tired
friends come see us by the road side
towing the wrecks with good intentions
friends come see us by the road side
injecting new hope from forgotten supplies
but we’re so tired
tired of trying
trying to make those square wheels roll
but we’re so tired
tired of trying
tired of trying to make those square wheels roll
but we’re so tired
tired of trying
tired of trying to make those square wheels roll
yeah we’re so tired
tired of trying
tired of trying to make those square wheels roll
so tired
